Celebrity chef and fermented-shark-eater Anthony Bourdain returns to the Travel Channel with a new TV series, "The Layover" (Mondays at 9 p.m. ET). The 55-year-old once again tours the world in search of the perfect meal. In the first episode, he visits Singapore for 30 hours, devouring wonton noodles, Hainanese chicken rice, and other intriguing foods.
What's different with the new series is that it emphasizes plenty of budget-conscious travel tips to allow people to actually follow in his footsteps. Expect detailed advice, such as which bus is best to hop from the airport to your hotel. Let's hear it for truly useful travel television! Yay!
That said, critics disagree about the show. Slate panned it, while writers at the New York Times and CNN.com adored it.
We plan to watch and judge the series for ourselves. Budget Travel has always had a soft spot for Bourdain, whom we most recently interviewed in our March 2011 issue. We especially love how he used his long-running, Emmy-award-winning series "No Reservations" to persuade Americans that it is safe to eat at street carts in foreign countries. (It really is!)
If you watch the show, come back and share your thoughts by posting a comment. Thanks!
