The Statue of Liberty (hawkdoc2002/myBudgetTravel)

Just in time for the Statue of Liberty's 125th birthday on October 28th, the National Park Service is gearing up to give the aging structure some much needed TLC. Starting October 29, 2011, the interior of the statue, including its dedicated museum, will be closed to the public.

According to the Statue of Liberty National Monument website, "As of July 2011, all available tickets to the Crown have been reserved." In other words, if you were hoping to visit New York City and climb to the top of the Statue of Liberty, you'll have to wait until next year.

Throughout the year–long $27.3 million renovation, the museum, stairs, elevators, and restrooms will be updated to provide visitors with better accessibility and safety.

Those still interested in making the site part of their travel plans will be glad to know that Liberty Island itself will stay open to the public and that construction will not disturb the outside appearance of the Statue. You'll still be able to get great pictures by boat or from land without interference.

Tickets to the Statue of Liberty can be purchased online by visiting StatueCruises.com. Just choose your point of departure—either Battery Park in New York or Liberty State Park in New Jersey—and select any additional options, like an audio tour. Each ticket—starting at $13 for adults, $10 for seniors over age 62, and $5 for children ages 4 to 12—gives you access to both Liberty Island and Ellis Island, another great historical site for history lovers or anyone researching their family tree.
