Ask Trip Coach: Multi-generational travel
Posted by: Brad Tuttle, Wednesday, Feb 9, 2011, 2:50 PM

How do you keep toddlers and teens, grandparents and in-laws, and everyone in between happy on a big group vacation?

Well, for one thing, with careful planning. If you have questions about taking a multi-generational vacation -- or if you don't even know where to start -- we want to hear from you right now. You may be wondering:

What kinds of vacations work best for trips accommodating everybody from infants to seniors?

How do you settle on a destination that's relaxing for the folks who want to relax, and yet not too boring for the folks who crave fun and excitement?

What kind of lodging, or variety of lodging, makes the most sense for a group like this?

How does the group decide who pays for what?

Is it best to plan the details yourselves, or leave it up to a pro?

Are there ways to get discounts due to the age of travelers (young or old), or the size of your group?

How do you maximize the potential that the young and old will bond and create great memories on the trip?

If you've got questions along these lines, ask away, and we'll provide answers in an upcoming Trip Coach column.

What kinds of international vacations work best for trips accommodating everybody from infants to seniors? I'm looking for something beyond Disneyworld and other amusement parts. I have an 18-month-old, a 5 week old niece, my sister and her husband, my parents and my husband and I.

How do you settle on a destination that's relaxing for the folks who want to relax, and yet not too boring for the folks who crave fun and excitement?

We took out family of 10, 5 children ages 7 to 13, and 5 adults to an all inclusive hotel in Playa del Carmen. Everyone had a great time, and adults were able to relax quite a bit. Kids played in the pool and beach quite a bit. Also went Kayaking. They also enjoyed downtown Playa del Carmen.

My wife and grand daughter took a family trip with Rick Steves which was perfect, there were special activities for the kids separate from the adults and they had their own table at meals. Six countries in two weeks, absolutely the best!

We flew into Sitka, AK, with my parents, husband and two children, ages 4 & 6. We stayed at a hotel on the waterfront. The next day, my hubby and father went charter salmon fishing, while we hiked the beach at low tide and went on the Totem Pole trail. The next day we all saw the salmon fish hatchery together. Then a day walking through the quaint town and window shopping. Then we boarded a ferry for a four hour cruise to Juneau where we stayed at a B&B for 3 nights. The ferry had a kid-friendly area with movies playing, hot soup and snacks, great views for whale-watching and photo-taking, and comfortable reclining chairs or booths with tables. In Juneau, the guys did some more shore fishing and we went to the Raptor Center there and the Bear Fortress. Low tide beach combing and picnics and Totem Pole trails. One day we hiked at Mendenhall Glacier and spent time in the visitor center, and a tasting at the Juneau Brewery in the afternoon. Then a relaxing ferry ride back to Sitka for one more night to catch our flight out with our salmon catches that All Fresh met us with at the Sitka airport! We all paid for ourselves. It was a fantastic bonding time for us and my parents with lifetime memories. I'd definitely do it again!
