Ask Trip Coach: Farmstays
Posted by: Brad Tuttle, Friday, Jan 7, 2011, 1:37 PM

It's time to get your hands dirty: In an upcoming Trip Coach column, we're digging into farmstay vacations.

As always, we want to hear from you first so we can put together a story that'll address all of your questions and concerns. If you've ever had questions big or small regarding farmstays, farm visits, or agritourism operations of any kind, now's the time to ask.

You might be wondering:

What are the best resources for finding and evaluating farmstays?

Do guests really have to do chores? What kind?

How "hands-on" are the activities? What happens if I don't want to milk a cow?

What kind of lodging can guests expect?

Are certain farms better than others for families? Or couples? Or solo travelers?

Are certain parts of the world more likely to have farms that welcome travelers?

How much do farmstays cost? Is it cheaper if guests work in the fields or tend to the animals?

Now's your turn. Fire away with any questions you have about farmstays, and we'll do our best to answer your most pressing concerns in an upcoming issue of Budget Travel.

Our boy/girl twins asked for a trip to Italy this summer as their high school graduation present. We would like to include a two or three night farm stay between Rome and Venice. We speak English and a little Spanish. We are willing to do chores. Can you recommend any farms?

Thank you but I grew up on a farm and that was more than enough. About all I remember was a lot of sweat and hard work for very little profit.

Brad- we are interested in staying on the Island of Ischia off the coast of Italy for 2 months next summer (2012). Our family came from Florio and we would like to connect with relatives and learn about our heritage. There are 8 people total - 4 kids with ages from 8-13. Should we rent a house? Apartment? Also, any ideas on a possible swim team my 13 year old can swim with?

Umm no thanks. I grew up in the middle of Indiana farm land left it when I was 18 and never wanted to return that that. Spending all weekend mowing a because you have multiple acres of land is NOT FUN! No vacation because no one wants to take care of your Horses/Cows/Pigs whatever you have also NOT FUN. If you've never been to one by all means but just don't think going out once and milking a cow by hand and then happily going back to the house and having some homemade wine and cheese is what a real farmer does all day...

Dear Mr. Tuttle, I enjoyed your article on pet travel but there is an error. Although pets are not allowed on trails, they are allowed in the campground at Yellowstone National Park as long as they are restrained in a cage or crate or on a 6 ft. long leash. I just verified this on the official National Park Service web site for Yellowstone under "Things You Should Know Before You Come," then "Pets." I haven't checked the other parks you mentioned in the article.

Thanks for your comment Diane. We should have been more careful with our wording of the national parks section you mention. The point we were trying to make is that pets are not allowed on most national park hiking trails, and that many (but not all) national park campgrounds also ban pets. The general rule is that pets are allowed wherever cars allowed, though there are often rules requiring leashes or crates as you mention. Each park, and difference sections of parks, have their own rules, though, so it's best to check the specifics in advance.

Hi,
We are planning to go to Yellowstone Park the first or second week in June for a week or so. There will be 4 of us in our 50's & 60's, 2 of which have lung issues and can't walk very much.
What can we do there considering these physical limitations?
Two of us are coming from NJ & two from Florida; which aiport should we fly into?
Where should we stay? - we like TV, heat & air conditioning.
Will we want to visit the Park for 7 days or are there other sites to see outside of it? What & where are they?
Thank you!

Brad,
I am planning a 2 week family trip (5 adults age 49 - 73) to Scandinavia at the beginning of September. The main point of the trip is to spend a few days in and around Narpes, Finland (our town of origin). I am finding that a farmstay may be my best (only reasonably priced?) option for a group in this region. Having never been to Scandinavia, much less done a farm stay in Europe, can you give me any idea what to expect? We have stayed at B&B's in several European countries, and we have been to a Dude Ranch in Canada. Any comparison? Any advice would be most appreciated.
