This is one of my favorite restaurants is Boston. Not a fancy place but delicious homemade meals and outstanding service. They serve breakfast all the day long and yes, you can browse books as you eat.

Well, since this is Budget Travel, when I'm on the road alone, I go for Subway. No, I don't think they're the BEST subs, BUT they are consistent, made to order, and inexpensive travel food without the typical fat or calorie blast (depending on how you fix it, of course). So sure, I have little secret places I love (Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse), but Subway gets a lot of my travel food budget.

Near Philadelphia, West Side Gravy in Collingswood, NJ, is an upscale comfort food restaurant that serves gourmet versions of such dishes as macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken pot pie, peanut butter and jelly, meatloaf sandwiches, and cheesesteak spring rolls. Their homemade Snickers pie makes you moan with delight. I can't stay away from that place!

I'll nominate Acqua in White Bear Lake, MN (Just nort of St Paul, MN)WWW.AcquaWBL.Com
It's not inexpensive, but they regularly run specials ($30 for appetizer, dinner and dessert) that allows you to pick from at least half of the items on the menu. It's a small, local resteraunt that is located on a beautiful lake, with a deck directly in front of the local marina. I love their bread and make certain to order the fresh sweet corn when it's available in the summer. We're going again tommorrow night. The service is fantastic, and so is the food. We love road food, and track down the local, out of the way diners whenever we travel. But when we're home, and want to go someplace we know we know will have great food, well served in a comfortable, attractive atmosphere we seem to always default to Acqua.

Capt Jim Hansen's Seafood in North Miami, FL. It has the best fresh seafood around and it's a value for the size of the plate you get. They have their own fishing boats which makes it fresh. If you are there on a day hog fish is on the speacial board you are in for a real treat, it's the best, very clean white fish with no strong smell or taste to it, perfection.

As an avid fan of Texas style BBQ, I was shocked to find some of the best BBQ fare that I have ever had in Sherrills Ford, NC at a honky-tonk roadhouse called HorseFeathers Roadhouse. I thought I had eaten it all until I saw Hawg Wings on their menu. It eats like a highly seasoned pork chop on a stick......very unusual and very good. Some of the best okra and sweet potato fries going......plus this place is a big music and dance hall with a 24 tap bar made out of old doors. This weekend we are going back for an American Idol type talent contest. Highly recommended.

I have two to recommend. The first is in the town I grew up in, The second is where I live now.
KUMBACK CAFÉ
625 Delaware St
Perry, OK 73077
A great place to eat, and everyone in the town of Perry and beyond knows it. The food is homemade, the portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. Authentic Oklahoma Cattle Country and Mexican food Some of my favorites are the tall stack of brawny pancakes, the crisp-crusted chicken-fried steak, the swirly warm cinnamon roll, and the biscuits and sausage gravy.
Founded in 1926 in a town created by the 1893 Cherokee Strip land run, Kumback Lunch is the oldest cafe in Oklahoma with the same name and in the same location. It has a fascinating history and beautiful Art Deco Facade. The walls are covered with pictures and memorabilia of "Perry Heroes," including local athletes, several governors of the state, and Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer Charlie Hanger, who captured Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and brought him to the county jail in Perry.
ANDY NELSONS BBQ
11007 York Road
Cockeysville, MD 21030
Plenty of Baltimore football greats have tried their hands at the restaurant biz: Don Shula, Johnny Unitas and Ray Lewis all come quickly to mind. But none have a stronger hold on the hearts, minds and stomachs of Baltimoreans than former Colt Andy Nelson. Regularly voted "Baltimore’s Best BBQ" this is one "Q" you won’t want to miss.
The first thing you notice, before you even walk in the door, is the smell. The heady aroma of delicious meats smoking pervades from the moment you get out of your car. The smoky meats are rich in flavor and tender to the bone. The chicken is succulent and the ribs are robust--each seasoned and cooked over hickory wood. An array of sandwiches, ribs and tantalizing sides are offered. Desserts, though not the focus, are worthy of attention, especially the Alabama apple cake flavored with cinnamon and chunks of fruit. It's easy to order more at Andy's than you can eat.

A must for your list is Kona Joe's Island Cafe in Cedar Key, Florida. A great breakfast sandwich and for lunch an out of this world chicken salad sandwich. The locals favorite restaurant, not only is the food homemade and delicious, it is priced very reasonably.

I've seen in a few of these comments people looking for cheap, homestyle food...in Columbus, OH go to Nancy's...it's located on N. High St north of the OSU campus area.
Nancy's is your classic "greasy spoon" mom & pop style home cooking diner. Breakfasts are cheap & tasty, with a good selection of short-order grill offerings. Lunches are cheap & fast, with the vast majority of orders being "the special" of the day - look for meatloaf on Wednesdays, EXCELLENT chicken & noodles on Thursdays (both served with mashed potatoes & green beans). Aside from the specials, a few other options are available for lunch, though not necessarily encouraged.
The place is smaller than a lot of CLOSETS, so make sure to get there early - it fills up fast & stays pretty crowded. As the sign on the wall says "eat it & beat it".
Don't let the cramped quarters & hole in the wall appearance turn you off - Nancy's is cheap, fast, and good comfort food.

I live in South Lake Tahoe and when you ask any local here where to eat, we all say "FRESHIES". The fish tacos are unbelievable, everything is made from scratch, vegetarians can happily eat right next to carnivores, and when it snows 6 in or more, the soup is half price!
In North Lake Tahoe, Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar is the SPOT for the freshest fish, inventive cuisine and a fabulous Saki list. Plus, they offer dining specials all the time.

Alessia's Ristorante Italiano in Mesa, AZ, for the ambiance, the wines, and the food. If you're in the Phoenix area, this is definitely worth it. For dessert, Gelato Dolce Vita is 2 doors down in the same strip mall and offers the best gelato in metro Phoenix - maybe in Arizona.

During an overnight stay in Grand Rapids, MN, I picked up two sandwiches in a soft golden brown pizza dough casing at Sammy's Pizza & Restaurant. It was outstanding, the very best Italian flavor I have ever experienced. I was sorry to leave without being able to try one of their pizzas. My wife had a meatball and I had a 3-meat Italian. There was enough to save half of our sandwiches for the next night's meal. I wish we had one in K.C. I have sent them an e-mail message commending them on their food, as well as the service and courtesy of their staff.

Miami, Florida: My fave local hot spot with delicious authentic Cantonese food is MISS YIP CHINESE CAFE located on Lincoln Rd in Miami Beach. Miami doesn't have a Chinatown, this is the best Chinese restaurant we have, and how delicious it is. Not only is it an amazing restaurant, upstairs you will find a hidden local hot spot lounge/nightclub called Buck 15. This is a local favorite combo!

We just ate at the Greenville Inn nestled in the hills above Moosehead Lake in Central Maine. The area is remote, but the inn is a gem in the wilderness. I don't think I'll ever taste a crabcake as good as the one I had there. It's not really a place for kids (you need to allow at least 2 hrs for dinner), but the owners welcome children and have a cozy tv room just off the dining room where they'll put in a dvd if your kids get restless.

Grapevine, Texas
Farina's Winery & Cafe
Great food. Great staff. Excellent wine selection. The antique bar in the main dining room is gorgeous and came from the Manchester United locker room. Check out the grape cluster chandelier, a one-of-a-kind piece commissioned by the City of Grapevine. This is the kind of place where you can have a romantic dinner for two, or, sit at the bar and meet new friends. Located in the Historic District of downtown Grapevine, Texas - it's just minutes away from DFW Airport. What a great find! (All the servers are great, but my favorites are: Donna, Stephanie, Ruth and Megan)

Grapevine, TX: Farina's Winery & Cafe (420 S Main Street) The pizza is fantastic. Italian menu, great wine, live music on the weekends, and a really great staff that will make you feel like a part of the family.
Grapevine, TX: Cafe Italia on Northwest Highway. BYOB which makes this dining out an inexpensive gem. Delicious food! Try the lobster ravioli, stuffed mushrooms and ... well, all of it.

Arnold's Country Kitchen in Nashville
Arnold's was one of 10 restaurants in this country to receive the "America's Classics" award from the James Beard Foundation. I've traveled the world over, eating in some high-class restaurants; Arnold's, serving the best Southern vittles you can buy, is among the best. It just doesn't get any better. Their country fried steak, fried chicken, chicken pot pie, fried catfish, barbeque, macaroni and cheese, and many vegetables are outstanding, and their pies, especially the chess and the chocolate, are simply divine. A large glass of sweetened iced tea, a meat and two or three vegetables, and a piece of pie can be consumed for the unbelievable price of $10 or so, including tip. It's worth a trip to Nashville.

Milwaukee Ale House: They brew their own beer here and a couple blocks away. The BEST beer in town! And, great bar food, for both vegetarians (like myself) and meat-eaters (like my husband).

Forno's in on Ferry STreet in Newark, New jersey is a great spot for a taste of Spain and wonderful hospitality. Set in the Ironbound section of Newark--just steps away from Penn Station, Forno's offers a vast selection of authentic Iberian favorites from caldo gallego to tarta almendra. And the portions!!!! Almost no one leaves without the signature maroon bag carrying leftovers to savor another day. Although a bit pricey, the service and portion size are truly worth it. In Denver, Co. Jack 'n Grill's for great New Mexican food. HUGE portions at very reasonable prices.
In Brighton, Co. The Brighton Depot Restaurant. Be sure to have the fish and chips. Some of the best fish I've ever had. I was told by my server that the chicken fried steak is super good, too.

The Wharf, On Derry Street in Harrisburg PA, has great food. The seafood will melt in your mouth, the pasta, steaks and chops are all cooked just right, they also have very tasty side dishes. They even have really good appetizers and salads. The service is excellent and the prices are very reasonable. also a nice outside patio.

Gene, I have to say I'm really disappointed in your post. I understand that you are trying to comply with the concept of BUDGET Travel, but there are so many unique and inexpensive options that aren't fast food. I mean, that's a little ridiculous. They don't need your help with their marketing campaign, and this is about the best local spots (Subway is neither "best" nor "local"). I would recommend a questionable hot dog from a street vendor (which would be less expensive, for the record) than Subway. And the fact that you mentioned both Subway and Dino BBQ in your post is sacrilegious! As for me, I'm all about the little hole in the wall spots. They tend to be less expensive AND they are often so good. One great example is Mother's Cupboard, a diner in Syracuse. It doesn't get much cheaper or tastier than that (just be careful if you have high blood pressure or cholesterol).

This comment is for the restaurant 217 in Tuckerton, NJ. It is an absolute lovely dining experience. The care to which the owners have gone to make the environment unique and special is beyond over and above. This is a diamond in the rough. It is well worth the visit. The menu is also varied which adds to the entire experience. If you are looking for a special night out - think of reserving a table at 217 - where you will not be disappointed. Attention to detail from the menu to the building and decorating through to the menu makes 217 well worth the trip. I am eager to see what the owners will do next! We will definitely be back again soon for dinner or lunch or afternoon tea!

217 in Tuckerton, New Jersey is a spectacular find. The food is outstanding as is the menu. There is something there for everyone. The decor is beautiful. A former home along the main street in Tuckerton, the owners of 217 have decorated it beautifully. Each room has its own theme and it is simply a warm, inviting setting for dinner with friends or family. I highly recommend it.

Mississauga, Ontario Canada: Lucy's Seafood. Not fancy just great fresh fish. Of course they have the regular fare for the land lubbers but always a very consistent restaurant for a great meal. Been going there for years and even though I've move to another city, when I'm there it's top of my list.

I really love to eat at Wahoo's raw fish and bar when I go on vacation in the Myrtle Beach/Murrells Inlet area. It's a place that we just happened to stubble upon and it turned in to a special place. It's outdoors so you get to enjoy the beautiful beach air as well as a amazing view of the inlet. On top of that, the service was great and the salmon is to die for! Great place that I would recommend to anyone!

The Crystal Grille in Greenwood, Mississippi........seriously delicious Southern fare and the thickest highest meringue on pies you've ever seen. The Blue Plate Special is an entree ( at least 20 to choose from ), 2 sides, warm freshly baked cornbread and yeast rolls, dessert like homemade banana pudding with chunks of banana and meringue folded together in a delicious custard base and a drink for around $12. The restaurant has been on the square Greenwood across the street from the railroad track since around 1900. Eating there is like stepping back in time.

Cantina Mayahuel and The Station get my award for giving you the authentic San Diego vibe of the moment - indoor and outdoor dining flowing in to each other, casually stylish decor, patrons comfortable in flip flops and shorts, great knowledgeable service, local ingredients and cuisine. The Station serves amazing burgers and local brews in a converted trolley station with a huge garden with picnic tables and plenty of room for kids and dogs. Cantina Mayahuel has 100 kinds of tequila and well-prepared Mexican bar food served in a beautiful space. Friday night is mole night and should NOT be missed.

Top of the Hill Grill, Brattleboro, Vermont
After traveling for hours from Canada to New York through central Vermont, there it is, just before crossing into MA. Great BBQ pull pork, beautiful casual outdoors ambiance under a huge tent, friendly, off a main road but tucked in woods, affordable.
Put it on your list for lunch or dinner, you won't be disappointed.

Vegan dining at it's finest. Gobo (in the West Village and Upper East Side, NYC) touts their cuisine as "Food For The Five Senses". Both restuarants are simple and contemporary in design, everything done in wood. Service is amicable and prompt. Prices are reasonable in the appetizers and small plates category, but jump when you get to Large Plates/Entrees.
Start with the New England Rolls for an appetizer, followed by the pine nut medley (meat-atarians alike will also enjoy these dishes). Wash it down with one of their refreshing tonics. If you've never tried dining vegan, you might be pleasantly surprised here.

If you are ever in the Deep South in a little town called McComb, Mississippi (Halfway between Jackson, MS and New Orleans, LA) you HAVE to stop and eat at the CABOOSE Restaurant in the downtown area. They are known for their wonderful steaks and have delicious daily seafood specials prepared by Chef Parker Voss. Fine dining in a beautifully restored building that showcases SW Mississippi's railroad history. The small(ish) city of Hammond, Louisiana boasts many good restaurants BUT if you are craving SUSHI then KIRIN SUSHI in downtown Hammond is the only place to go. We drive 50 miles to eat here at least once a week! We have traveled to many far flung places and eaten sushi in many cities and countries but have decided that the speciality rolls at Kirin are the best we have ever eaten. The menu is extensive and the freshness always top priority! Sit at the sushi bar, booth or hibachi table and try the Cajun Roll, Henry Roll, Ponchatoula Roll or anything on the menu! Our favorite is to let the chef(s) prepare from off the menu and select what is the freshest for the day.. WOW is all I can say!

THE TAVERN IN STATE COLLEGE, PA
The Tavern is one of my favorite places. Unlimited side dishes (try spaghetti and the spinach salad with mushrooms) with your entree (steaks and seafood are great). The prices are so reasonable and there is a children's menu, too. Cozy, not fancy, but dining in one of the rooms where the fireplace is on is amazing. And don't forget to enjoy an Original Sin drink from the Adam's Apple bar and some Tavern Cheesecake for dessert. Mmm, I wish I was there.
