A few months ago we noticed doorway photos emerging as a theme on myBudgetTravel, our online community. Excuse the mixed metaphor, but these remarkable doorways are real windows into other cultures. Here are 23 of the best images.

The photographs of doors in various countries are very enlightening as to the culture and their uncanny appreciation of color. I have seen some of these places, but did not necessarily notice the contrasting, colorful doors, except in Mexico. I have not, however, travelled to South America. Thanks for sharing.

These doors are fabulous. I have some from gardens in England, Hidcote, and others and have seen Peruvian and New Mexican doors. I will keep my eyes more open to interesting doors on future trips.

I would have loved to have seen all of the door photographs. However, even at work where I have a T1 line, I averaged about 23 seconds to see each photograph on the slide show because of all the advertising that has to load first.
Sorry, not interested.

Yes, it is RIDICULOUS how long these photos take to load. Hopefully the advertisers will realize that most people will not sit through the ads to see a few pics. I closed the feature out after the second pic.

Wonderful, evocative pictures, each taken with an artist's eye. Maybe the time problem was fixed; I clicked through the slide show with none of those annoying, long waits.

Loved the door pics, I have many that I have taken on my trips also, seems like the older more dilapidated the door is the more I like it.

I didn't see a SINGLE ad on any of the pictures on the slide show! Also, took mere seconds to load the whole show - so don't blame "Budget Travel," blame your server!

These photos take too long to load. I lost interest...

Rebecca & Susanna,
Some curious photos of doorways in various parts of the world. Note photo #6 for the intense blue of the urns in Chefchaouen, Morocco. I wonder if the photographer used filters to achieve such a hue of blue or if it is the actual color.

Great shots. Doors/windows always ask the question, "What's on the other side?" Running Time Warner cable, the pics loaded in 5 seconds from the time I clicked "next", but I do hate the animated ads trying to draw my eye from the photos.

I would have loved to see the door pictures because I love taking pictures of windows and doors as I travel. But, It was taking much too long to down load. We want to see the pictures not rent a car or what ever....

I've been taking photos of doors and windows during my travels for the past few years. I can say there is a wide variety, and some very interesting features to each one. Sure makes for great photography! Thanks for sharing these. I personally think I have some pretty terrific ones too.

Probably the best reader photo feature yet on budgettravel.com. What is it about doors that have the power to transport us to a place? Loved it!

great idea...enjoyed #7 in Angkor Wat...multi-layers spike my curiosity to unlock the door and see the other side.

I am surprised that there were none from Argentina. I saw the most amazing doors there...not as colorful as some of these, but commanding attention nontheless.

To all you people complaining about the download time wasted on advertising - there is a very, very easy solution - download the Adblock Plus add-on.
Or if you use Internet Explorer, first switch to Firefox, and then download Adblock Plus. Or if you prefer, go for Chrome - that has a pretty good ad-blocking plug-in as well.
You don't *have* to waste your bandwidth on advertising!

love the colors - would love to come home to this. And I agree with others who commented that doorways show another country. I so agree. Something so simple yet so profound.

I love looking at the doors wherever I travel. They are the doorways to homes and the peoples hearts who live or have lived there.
