Airport security update
Posted by: Sean O'Neill, Wednesday, Jan 6, 2010, 12:00 PM

What to expect now at the airport security line?

• The rules you may have heard about recently—such as being required to sit for the last hour of an international flight—are no longer in effect. Flights have returned to normal, by and large. The routine of airport screening—you know, slip off your shoes, take your notebook out of your bag and put it on the conveyor belt in a bin—remains the same. Some differences:

• U.S. citizens flying domestically may be selected at random for additional screening.

• U.S. citizens flying internationally may be selected at random for additional screening that may include some mix of a full-body pat-down, a whole-body scan, and an inspection of carry-on luggage by hand and with the use of explosives-detection technology.

• The number and type of allowed carry-on items is still the same.

• "Passengers should not expect to see the same thing at every airport," the TSA says on its website. Citizens of foreign countries may be subject to heightened security attention at foreign airports or on entry into the U.S. Or they may not, depending on local policies. Citizens of, or travelers to, the following countries, may receive the most attention Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, or Yemen, as well as Cuba, Iran, Sudan, and Syria.

• A new iPhone app, Survey on the Spot, lets you send instant feedback on security procedures to the TSA—anonymously.

Just be aware that 100% of passengers leaving Canada to the United States are subject to a full body pat down and yes this includes children. The last Transport Canada update, dated January 5th states that no carryon is allowed with the exception of a small purse, laptop computer in a small laptop bag with accessories, a camera in a camera case with camera accessories as well as medical devices, strollers, and assistive devices. No bagpacks, no shoulder bags, no roll a boards, no small duffel bags. If in doubt, do not carry it on.

I just returned from Vancouver on Saturday and the procedure is an absolute inconsistent mess. The process is haphazard and the initial checkers before you put your checked bags through security don't know what they are doing. The contents of the carryon doesn't seem to be as important as the configuration of the bag itself. Some people are being told they can't have a computer with any liquids (in the plastic bag) while others are being allowed to bring almost anything in. You can have a computer in a shoulder bag, but not a rollon...what the hell is the difference? This is not making anyone safer, it is just confusing people (including the security staff themselves) and making air travel even more of a terrible experience. We told one of the security folks at the carryon exray what the initial checkers were doing and she was dumbfounded. She said that they shouldn't be doing that and that the procedures now were similar to what they had been (as the post above reported).

Anyway, we have reached the abolutely absurd.
