We pored over hundreds of your Italy submissions to pick these 20 outstanding photos. Some capture iconic images like a Tuscan hill town or homes piled on Cinque Terre's craggy coastline. Others hit on quieter, unexpected moments—a gondolier pausing for a break or a rainbow-colored umbrella brightening a dreary afternoon in Siena.

See for yourself in our slide show.

The reader photos of Italy are wonderful. But you didn't POUR over the photos, you PORED over them. (Hire a copy editor.)

Good catch, Bill. Glad you enjoyed the slide show.

Slide #2 look like the Lake Como town of Verenna, not Verona. Lovely pictures. Thanks.

Planning first trip to Italy...
Is there a photo gallery for viewing various locations? Thanx..

Posted By Gib Reed on July 7, 2009, 1:48 PM

Paige is right it is Verenna on Lake Como. The most wonderful of all the little towns on the lake. Jane ( I took that photo- don't know how I could have attached wrong name )All of the Italy pictures are wonderful. Southern Italy is my next stop any suggestions?

Ah sweet memories. I have been to Italy twice and often feel like I just won't be able to make it another year if I can't get back there. However, since I have lost my job I am not sure if I ever really will be able go again but knowing I have seen and stood at some of the places in these pictures brings a smile to my face and a lump to my throat. Thanks to all for sharing your wonderful photographs!

I was a lucky soul to have lived in northern Italy for 6 years. I have not been back since 1967 but a trip is on the horizon in 2010 and I can't wait to see if there is anything that has not changed in Aviano and Pordenone. Beautiful photos... thanks,
Dave Ford

I've been desirous of seeing italy ever since I saw the movie: Under the Tuscan Sun. Would I get to see all of the sights in the photos by taking this deal of $699? Help me plan a tour to see everything in the photos and maybe more. THANKS!

I have always wanted to see Italy and the town my parents were born in. Everyone I talk to tells me about how much walking there is. That is my big problem that I can not do much walking. I am in my upper 70's, and sure hope to make it there before I die. Would I be able to rent a scooter to get around? Also do you have solo tours? Seeing the photos makes me want to go more. Wonderful.

Hi all,
We've updated the slide show caption to correctly identify Jane's photo (#2) as the town of Varenna on Lake Como.

As we increasingly integrate reader-generated content across the pages of our site, we'll keep a closer eye out for these kinds of errors, which can easily slip through. Paige, thanks for your help this time!

My absolute favorite is the gondolier reading a book!

Posted By Cristina Martinez on July 10, 2009, 8:09 PM

My first comment is go to Italy now Ernie, especially to your parents' town. We went to my husband's grandfather's town, Ripacandida, and met family who still live there. What a great time filled with wonderful memories. There can be a lot of walking, but some of the best times we had anywhere in Italy were wandering the streets of the smaller towns. If you get tired there are lots of places to sit down enjoy a cup of caffe' or gelato and people watch. Go for it Ernie and soon! The pictures were beautiful! Some brought back memories, others reminded me that there are lots of new places to see. God willing my husband and I will see all we can.

I used to live in Italy and the pictures brought back some of the best times of my life. Oh, by the way, "PORED" is correct, not "POURED." Look it up!

I am planning Foligno in 2010. My mom was born there on April 3 1910 and for that 100th anniversary date I want to be there. Hope I am still in good health then.

Thought you might like to dream with me. Dad and I have been to most of these places. I'd go again and you'll see why I'm in love with Italy. Be sure to click on picture of slide show to get the next one. Love, Mom

Words simply cannot express my joy at viewing this slideshow. Italy is absolutely my favorite country to visit in the whole world. My husband and I have just returned from a month long vacation that included Milan, Venice, Cinque Terre, Verona, and Lake Como, (Bellagio and Porto Fino were exquisite! In years past we visited, Rome, the Amalfi Coast, the Isle of Capri, Pisa, Florence, Rome and Siena---and we cannot wait to return! Such beautiful pictures, such lasting memories. Thank you for this slideshow!!

Lovely, lovely. I lived in Napoli for several years in the late 60's and I know many things do not/cannot change. Their respect for their history, always a living history, and adaptation into the modern world awes me. Hope to go sometime, probably with a group and a bus and my walker.

Great pics...I get a lump in my throat also looking at them...planning to go back this time next year...I went for my 50th b-day...wanted to go my whole life...I really think a tour is the way to go...no worries about anything almost,it is a true vacation..just put your luggage outside the door and your off to your next incredible destination...breathtaking...I loved, loved, loved it...next time I have to take my husband!

Great pictures! It's why I keep going back to Italy even though there are many beautiful places in the world that I've passed on in favor of another Italian vacation. I'm planning another trip there in 2010. On one of my trips to London, a resident there asked me why Americans are so fascinated with Europe, ignoring much of our own history. I don't think that's true but, if it is, it could be because Europe reveres its ruins and "modernizes" around them instead of razing them in favor of memorials. We're hungry for first-hand information and that's why we flock to the Roman Forum and the

Enjoyed the pictures very much. Brought back lots of memories! But doesn't anybody go to the southern part of Italy? I missed not seeing pictures of Assisi, Sorrento, Naples, the Isle of Capri etc. I was in Italy in the 80's and was hoping to see if things had changed much. Hope to go back some day soon. However, I disagree that a tour is the way to go. I have always traveled on my own and feel that I have seen many things and met many lovely people that I would not have encountered on a tour.

Posted By Gloria on October 19, 2009, 6:45 PM

Easy for you to say, Gloria! However, when you are an older single lady, its not necessarily the way to go. First - it's kind of lonely to go on your own - you need someone to share things with. Secondly, trying to get around on your own can be a headache, especially if you don't speak the language. The smaller towns frequently dont have many English speakers. Ask me how I know all this?
For most people on their own for a first trip, a tour is much more productive, and then they can decide where they want to go back to.....

Posted By Clairee on October 23, 2009, 11:14 AM

There is something missing in these photo's. The south of Italy is just as beautiful and deserved at least one pic. I just got back a month ago from a 6 weeks staying just outside Naples with family. Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi are all beautiful even in Winter! Oh and I forgot to mention further south in Calaabria and Sicily which are loads of fun in the summer.

Hi Linda, you're absolutely right! We'd love to see some photos from your extended trip to southern Italy; you can upload them to myBudgetTravel here, http://www.budgettravel.com/bt-reg/PrepareLogin.do

the photos are truly beautiful. Some brought back memories and others of places to check out in the future. I must have "missed the memo" about having readers contribute Italy photos, as I have several of my own that would certainly add to this group.
