Affordable Paris: Two new "designer hostels" for $40 a night

Two "design" hostels have opened in Paris within the past year. Trying to shed the granola image of yesteryear, both promise contemporary comforts with rates starting at just €30 ($40) per night.

St. Christopher's Inn settled in last summer along the Bassin de la Villette and claimed to be the most modern hostel in Paris. Occupying a brand new building on the water, this hostel certainly has location going for it. The picture outside their window includes houseboats and groups of French people are playing pétanque along the banks of the canal.

The Inn also has Belushi’s pub downstairs for those who don’t dare leave the backpacker bubble. As for the amenities, you can book a private double from €40 ($53) per person in the high season, or sleep in dormitory of 6-8 people for €29-36 ($39–48). Breakfast is included, and the hostel offers €6 ($8) backpacker meals every night at 7 p.m. Guest can get online at their Internet café or by connecting to free Wi-Fi throughout the hostel. Linens are provided, but (lest you forget this is a hostel) you'll have to bring your own towel (159 rue de Crimée, 19th arrondissement, 011-33/1-40-34-34-40).

The most recent opening is Oops down in the city’s southern hemisphere. Philippe Maidenberg's interior, with bold splashes of color throughout the hostel, has already been written up in a Japanese design mag. These dorm rooms are less spacious than at St. Christopher's, but are similarly cheap—€30 ($40) per person in a four-room dorm, or €80 (about $105) for a private double (price per room). The price includes free breakfast, free Internet access, and free linens. User reviews on other sites have raised some concerns about security, which is a drag. I can't confirm or deny these reports (here and here), but wouldn't want to leave my own iPod lying around. I guess some things at hostels—even the fancy new design variety—never change (50 avenue des Gobelins, 13th arrondissement, 011-33/1-47-07-47-00).

Hi there to all of you Paris lovers,

As far as hostels go, St. Christopher's does look really cool. For those who can't go over the 40€ ticket, it's a great solution. If you happen to be in love however, the rate for a double bed ensuite is 90€. Always be prepared to fall in love.

For that price, why not get a fully-furnished apartement? Sit out on your own private balcony and enjoy a bottle of wine and cheese when your restaurant budget has run out. Get a real taste of Parisian living by renting a real home.

Best wishes

Carsten

As I read the price for a doubel at Oops ($105) I was also thinking, why not rent an apartment? I have for the past few years and it's great. So much cheaper than a hotel with more room and a kitchen. I use apartment-paris.com. As of about a week ago there were a few studio apartments in the 5th and 6th for 375 Euros a week. Of course there are some drawbacks - the one in the 6th is on the 6th floor without an elevator and the ones in the 5th are very spartan, but they are no different than a hostel and you don't have to share with several other people.

How do you go about finding an apartment in Paris for, say, 10 days?

Posted By Nat on May 7, 2009, 8:51 PM

There are many sites on the internet for apartment rentals. I use then extensively during my travels. As mentioned above, it is much better than having a hotel room. VRBO is a big one. As is HOMELIDAYS, VILLANAO.CO.UK, CRAIGSLIST, etc. Do a search for self service apartments. Many will show up.

How to find an apt in Paris: one word: GOOGLE it!
there are hundreds, maybe thousands. Pay attention
to size/dimensions.

If boutique hostels seem too pricey, I'd recommend a cool loft apartment- we booked ours here http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/france/paris/41211/

Much easier than googling some random site, and there was no booking fee!

Last October we spent a week at Hotel Formule 1 near Gare de St. Ouen. For a very small but private room for 3 people (double bed with bunk over, chair, counter, sink, just abt room to rurn around) I believe we paid 37 euros per night. Toilets & showers were in the hall but clean & never full, & the elevator worked. Next door was a sister establishment where we could have paid 10 euros more per night for private bath.
Our then 17-year-old son loved the fact that busloads of HS & college-aged European kids constantly came and went on their tours.
Not luxurious, but adequate. Great cheap mid-east food & one of Paris' best flea mkys in the neighborhood too.
