House-swapping secrets revealed
Posted by: Budget Travel, Thursday, Oct 2, 2008, 5:32 PM

In Budget Travel's latest issue, Joanna Goddard offers a first-person account of how she and her sister swapped her New York City apartment for another couple's apartment in San Francisco.

Joanna has been house-swapping for years. She's stayed at a condo in Miami, a flat in L.A., a chateau in Switzerland, and a pied-a-terre in Paris--just to name a few examples.

Listen to Joanna as she answers key questions in this CNN.com Live! webcast (which broadcast earlier today). Then read the article, "The Secrets to Happy House Swapping."

It's great to hear that Joanna has had such successful home swaps. As an experienced exchanger, she will know just what to look for and discuss with potential exchange partners before agreeing to go ahead with an exchange. For first timers though, it can be especially useful to join a specialist home exchange agency. A long established service will charge a modest membership fee and provide a private member area (it's a reassurance to know you are only dealing with others who have also paid to join and are genuinely interested in arranging swaps), detailed guidance on how to avoid any problems during an exchange and both email and phone contact details so that you can easily contact the agency if you have any questions.

If you are looking for an exchange to a particular country, it is also a good idea to look for an established home exchange service based in that country as such an agency will have the widest choice of exchange offers.

Craigslist has been great to me personally for apartment swaps. It's like owning real estate if you have any apartment at all in NYC. I've traded for Miami, Florence and Paris. They've all been fantastic (although the first one was on a 7th floor walkup, now I check that out first)! I recommend it as a great way to see the world.
