Save/ShareDelta is adding wireless Internet access to its entire domestic fleet, enabling travelers to work or surf at 33,000 feet. The service, according to a scoop in the Wall Street Journal , will be available on some planes soon. By year end, Delta will have 73 planes with Wi-Fi. By this time next year, all of its 330 domestic planes will offer the service, which will cost $10 for flights under three hours and $13 for longer flights The airline has confirmed that the story is true.
Starting with its smaller MD-88 jets, Delta passengers with Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as laptops, smartphones and PDAs, will soon be given mid-flight access to the Internet, corporate and personal e-mail accounts, as well as SMS texting and instant messaging services, for a fee. The service includes free access to the online editions of The Wall Street Journal and Frommer's (a company that is separate from Budget Travel).

I'm not sure how I feel about this. As a young, laptop-owning graduate student, I feel great about the ability to do research and read the NYTimes on planes. But I cringe at the thought of a plane full of people typing on laptops, not only for the sound of all that clacking, but the cords (to fall over in the aisle); the climb (that is, climbing over people's laps AND laptops just go to the bathroom); and the incredible delay it will be if everyone has their laptop going through the security line. Ugh!
