Affordable Europe: German hotels with an unusual perk
Posted by: Kate Appleton, Thursday, Jun 5, 2008, 10:02 AM

Wondering where to stay in Germany? Consider the family-run InterCityHotel chain, which has 30 properties throughout the country and one in Vienna. (A 32nd is slated to open in Hanover in 2009.)

Guests at the moderately priced hotels, often located right by airports and train stations, get to ride public transportation for free throughout the stay. Local buses, cable cars, underground trains, and funiculars are an efficient, fun way to get to know an unfamiliar city—and the savings through InterCityHotels can be considerable. In Berlin, a sprawling city with an extensive transportation network, a seven-day ticket would normally set you back $40 (€26.20).

I did a quick search for reservations for two over the weekend of June 27-28 and found a rate of $138 (€89) per night at the InterCityHotel Berlin, including breakfast. A few more examples: the InterCityHotel Frankfurt Airport, $105 (€ 68) per night; the InterCity Hotel Freiburg, $108 (€ 70) per night, if you book at least seven days in advance; and the InterCityHotel München (Münich), $184 (€ 119), with breakfast.

Very informative. I would also like to suggest the Citea Aparthotels & Villas in France. The rooms are a bit on the small side, but generally include a small fully furnished kitchenette, free high speed internet, and in many cases an indoor pool. And for all this, the price is extremely low. These are NOT 4 star hotels, and are not in the touristy parts of the city, but they are GREAT for doing France on a budget. Some are near the borders, so you can easily jump into the next county. url is http://www.citea.com/Site/HomePage,en.html

The InterCityHotel chain is owned by the Steigenberger Hotel Group which is controlled by the Steigenberger family.

I would also suggest Best Western! These are usually individually owned hotels and there are often good bargins in Europe (France, Germany, italy) in the winter and early spring. BW is a marketing/reservation group, they don't own any of the hotels.

One of the advantages of BW: Once when we got to a particular BW in Paris that we had stayed at several times before they didn't have a room for us that night even though I had a reservation for 7 nights. (Someone didn't check out as planned.)

They put us up at their one-star lower rated place around the corner for one night in an inferior room but charged us for that night at a lower rate. When we got back home I called BW customer service. They not only credited me for the first night but back-charged the hotel in Paris.

For really cheap accomodations, there is a chain of hotels Europe-wide called Accor hotels, and two particular hotels in the chain that I am familiar with are www.ibishotels.com and www.etaphotels.com their rates for two people in Berlin, Germany run from 40 to 60 euros per night depending on which part of the city you want, and of course the time of year. They are worth checking out.

Some hostels also have hotels, which tend to be cheaper than regular hotel chains and are slightly more affordable. They are a good option when traveling on a budget.
