Save/ShareNew body scanners installed yesterday at airports in New York City and Los Angeles allow security screeners to peek under passengers' clothing to detect hidden weapons. The process takes about one minute. The devices do not replace metal detectors, which passengers still have to pass through.
The TSA has ordered an additional 30 of the machines, and plans to roll them out nationwide. One scanner has been installed at LAX's Terminal 5, which has gates for Delta and Aeromexico. Another scanner has been installed at New York City's Kennedy Airport, Terminal 8, which serves American Airlines, American Eagle, Finnair, Jet Airways and Malev, says Newsday.
The machine has already been in testing at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, where it has become popular. "More than 90 percent of passengers have elected to undergo screening with this technology instead of being subjected to a pat-down," say the TSA blog.
The "millimeter wave" machines use "low-energy electromagnetic waves to produce a computerized image of a traveler's entire body," says the Los Angeles Times. They're similar to devices installed in public courthouses around the country.

I just flew for the first time after receiving an artificial knee. I would prefer this scan over the personal pat downs I will always have to have....just for the time it would save. I also appreciate the accompanying picture for this article. It's worth 1,000 words.

no frickin way...No one has the right to see my naked body...in that "fuzzy" picture I can tell that is a man.
