Save/ShareStarting May 7, US Airways will offer customers the chance to pay a fee (starting at $5 one-way per flight) for an aisle or window seat assignment in the first several rows of coach class. About 8 out of every 100 seats will be up for reservation in this way, though some flights, including the US Airways Shuttle between D.C. and New York City, won't offer the option. US Airways' elite frequent-flier members will be able to book these seats free of charge, says USA Today's Ben Mutzabaugh.
The seats have no extra legroom. No extra anything!
You'll be able to select one of these "choice seats" during online check-in at an airport kiosk or on usairways.com from between 24 hours and up to 90 minutes before departure. Choice Seats will be available to US Airways' Dividend Miles Preferred members (and companions traveling on the same reservation) for free. They can book theses seats at any time after booking. They'll also have exclusive access to exit row seats.
Note, you'll be paying for the upgrade per-flight, so if your itinerary includes a layover, you'll have to pay a second fee for the second flight on the same journey.

Per USAirways: "Starting May 7, 2008, Choice Seat assignments on the aisle or window in the first several rows of the Coach cabin will be available for as little as $5 per flight." Since the fees are "as little as $5 per flight," I wonder what the maximum amount will be. I guess the only way to find out the amount would be to see what dollar figure comes up when you do web check-in. At least AirTran tells you ahead of time how much you pay when you make a reservation if you want to reserve a seat. Since USAirways will soon be charging $2.00 for a beverage, $15.00 for the first checked bag, and "as little as $5.00 for a choice seat, what is next? Pay toilets?

I feel the airlines have gone overboard. They are literally ripping people off right in the face! Why would anyone pay for a seat. It's like okay, I can get on the plane but now to sit I must pay extra. How does this make sense?
