It's time for another Question of the Week:
Travel is one of those things that you'd get really good at if you did them all the time. Unfortunately, few people get to do it all the time—including the staff of Budget Travel. So we're pooling our knowledge: We ask you a question, you share your advice, and then we spotlight the most helpful tips in a future magazine issue. This week's question is:
"I'm desperate for a warm-weather vacation this winter—ideally at a beach—but I want to go someplace where I won't get eaten alive by mosquitoes. (I'm the kind of person mosquitoes love, and the bites last for a week.) Anyone have any recommendations?" —Erik Torkells, Editor

My husband and I went to the two islands, or "Cayes" (pronounced "keys"), off the coast of Belize last year in December and did not have any issues with mosquitos. They tend to love me as well. The only bites I got in 10 days occurred during day trips inland to Mayan ruins (I have to say those trips were worth a few bites though!).
There is a lot of great information on Belize on the BudgetTravel site, so I recommend checking it out!

I may be lucky but have paid many visits to all of the Hawaiian Islands and never seen a mosquito.

We spent a week with our daughter's family at the Greenwood Resort, Cat Island, Bahamas. The rates are reasonable(http://www.greenwoodbeachresort.com/) , rooms fine, bugs didn't bother us. My daughter and granddaughter have strong reactions to bug bites and they were fine.
The staff is friendly, the beach secluded. You can walk for an hour in either direction and see no one.
Water crystal clear.

Erik,
May sound silly but do you eat bananas? - mosquitos are particularly attracted to people who do. Even crazier dryer sheets wih fabric softener are a great deterrent. One place you do not want to go is D.R. if your still worried.
Best of luck!

We've been going to Aruba in Feb for about 7 years and have never seen a mosquito. They generally love my husband (he must be very sweet) and they have never appeared there. It is a very dry island and I doubt that they like it. If you go, consider coming and going on weekdays. We decided to stay and extra two days this year after our timeshare week. What we saved moving the homebound flight from Sunday to Tuesday paid for the two nights and extra on car rental! It's not a fancy hotel but it's right on the beach.

We have traveled the Caribbean a lot and have never had any major problems with insects.
However, if you are concerned, go to Aruba.
Aruba is small beautiful desert island. The small amount of insects that do exist get eaten by the lizards. Have Fun, we did, Aruba is one of my favorite trips.

I recommend that you go to Gran Bahia Principe, Runaway Bay, Jamaica.
I live in Florida, and suffer from being bitten nearly each day.
Not one bite at this resort...for me this was note worthy.
Enjoy your stay, we did, and plan to return.

For four or five years we spent the month of Feb. in Key West. The weather was always very pleasant and we were never bothered by bugs. The apt. had four sets of french doors which we left open all day and even into the evening. Sat out on the deck after dark without a bug problem. Good luck

Maybe it's the sea breeze or maybe it's the lack of above-ground water, but there seem to be hardly any mosquitoes along the Yucatan coast of Mexico. I've vacationed there 10 times from Akumal to Cancun to Progreso and can't remember ever getting bitten. Twice our family took repellent and never used it.

A winter beach get away doesn't have to be the Caribbean! Why not Hawaii? Maui has wonderful beaches and winter is terrific for whale watching. My husband and I prefer the Big Island because of the deversity of beaches (black, green and white sand) and we can't resist the lava flow.

I've been to Cancun and the Riviera Maya, several times, between Oct-Mar, and have never had a mosquito bite. Always took a repellent but didn't need to use it. Same with Florida. I think the mosquitoes are more of a problem in summer months. Why not go wherever you want, and be prepared with a Deet timed release lotion? Sounds like you might want to invest in some of the insect-repellent clothing, too. And remember, there are more bugs in the jungle than at the beach.

The problem usually isn't mosquitoes, it's the darn sand flies.

Thanks, everyone! This is very helpful. (By the way, I wasn't considering Hawaii because I'm in New York and trying to find a getaway without 11 hours of flying... I grew up going there and love it, but it's not right for this trip.)

Aloha!
Well, I'll have to recommend Hawaii, mosquitoes are no problem here! Hawaiian winters see wonderful weather, with highs of about 80 degrees. Oahu is fun during the winter to see the huge waves on the North Shore, but the beaches are still swim-able and dive-able on the South Shore (Waikiki/Honolulu), and East Shore (Kailua beach is gorgeous and where the locals go).
P.S. I went to Belize this year (loved it), but got eaten alive by mosquitoes on both the islands and inland.

Our favorite places in the Caribbean seem to abound with things that bite - mosquitoes, no seeums (the worst), sand flies, etc. This last trip we wore Bug-Off patches that release B1 into your system - each patch lasts 36 hrs. Before I had tried B1 pills but that was not effective, but the patches seemed to work. Walda

We have traveled a lot and never had a problem with mosquitos anywhere but Miami area and Costa Rica. Aruba is fantastic, clean, safe and perfect weather. Belize and Tahiti are beautiful and have outstanding snorkeling. Hawaii is at least four paradises in one. Grand Caymans are very nice and modern and none of these have bothering bugs. So Aruba and Tahiti are top picks.

In order to truly have a Caribbean experience I recommend staying on an island like St. Kitts. Going to a smaller island allows for a quieter, true Carribean experience with less commercialism and crazy parties. For the truly memorable trip stay in a rented home. Often they are a fraction of the price (if you have a family or group of friends going) and allow you to get to know the locals who are a wealth of knowledge and kindness. Many homes are high on the hills overlooking the ocean and sea, providing remarkable sites that stay with you long beyond the memories of any bugs!

We've been to the Yucatan in Mexico too many times to
count. We have never had
problems with mosquitos but
after hearing of other people's problems we brought bug spray. We
carried it back and forth
about four times without
using it so we didn't pack
it this time. Some other
people were complaining
about bites but we never got one. We stayed at the
Iberostar Quetzal which is
a real jungle setting with
lots of wildlife so we would expect some problem but we never had one!!!!!

Hi, well, when I went to the Yucatan (The Riveria Maya) - I got bites from Spiders.
I recommend taking Vitamin B-1, 500mg, once a day for up to a week before your trip. Then during. You won't get bit by mosquitos. And it works fabulous on me. (I forgot to take it for the Riviera Maya trip!)
And the bugs just love me!
Also, don't wear ANY perfume, or scented lotions. They are attracted to that. When I was in Tahiti, I got bit, but when I switched to use only Aloe Vera, I never got bit again.
I only used my face moisturizer, but Aloe Vera all the rest of my body all the time.
Hope this helps! Have fun!

We went to Barbados in September, and I might have gotten 1 bite the whole 2 weeks we were there. I was really nervous too because mosquitos absolutely love me too. I still wore repellent (nice, unsented kinds) at night, but it was really really bug-free the whole time we were there, even though it was the rainy season. Good luck!

We went to Turquois Bay in Roatan, Hondorus...the sand flies ate up up...but there were no mosquitoes!!!

For a beach/warm weather vacation, I would reccommend Hawaii. No passport is needed (and we have all heard the nightmare stories about delays in receiving passports) and I have visited both winter and summer and have never been bothered by insect bites. The temp is about the same year round. I have visited Oahu, Maui and the big Island, but an partial to the Big Island.

St. Maarten seemed to be generally bug free except for the ants (tiny black ants) which hitched a ride back to the states in our luggage. Make sure you completely unpack your luggage and repack minus the ants if you go there. But no mosquitos.

Just got back from Dorado, Puerto Rico (west of San Juan).
Spent time at the beach, in Old San Juan, even in the rain forest (El Yunque).
We were there from Jan 1st thru 6th, and didn't see (or feel) a single mosquito.
Boy was I surprised.
Good Luck.

I you do not like mosquitoes and sandflies ... do not visit the Turks and Caicos Islands ... both in swarms, especially during the rainy season!!! And at sunrise!!! And at sunset!!! And expensive to boot!!!

I spent a week in Belize and the sand fleas ate me alive. I was miserable! I tried bug sprays, the insect coils, covering with a blanket, etc. I would not recommend Belize. It is further south, in Central America, and the insects and heat are worse there than they are further north.

Having booked my first holiday to Tobago and grenada I am keen to assess any mosquito problem.
In Europe (Scandanavia) and especially Scotland they are a big problem but they are seasonal. They come out after periods of heavy rain in marshy or lakeside areas -anywhere that is damp. So it is important to find the time of year when the mossies are in full flight and then decide to go or not.

My husband and I vacationed in Puerto Rico last year. I am VERY allergic to mosquito bites so I was really nervous about our stay in the rain forest for part of our trip. We did not see one mosquito. It was amazing! We went on a guided hike through the rainforest and were told by our guide that it is because of the Coqui frog population. You can always hear their peeping and they keep the mosquitos under control. Maybe that is why there are few mosquitos in Hawaii. I think that they have Coqui frogs as well. Merideth

We just got back from Riviera Maya and after spraying us all every day I managed to end up with 25 bites ! My son was only bitten twice, and hubby three times
I swear they go after only good meat !!!

Just returned from Sint Maarten / St. Martin. Great visit except for the mosquitoes.
Loads of mosquitoes on the leeward side in the Les Terres Basses section in September. It rained every other day after sunset (perfect timing). The rain and gentle breeze may have had something to do with it. The mosquitoes are very small and fast -- therefore hard to swat.
No problem on the windward side of the island at Dawn Beach. Very breezy, but absolutely no mosquitoes.

I visited the northern part of Puerto Rico and was eaten alive by mosquitos. When I covered my body in DEET, they would just bite me on the top of my head. Since the temperature doesn't vary greatly in Puerto Rico, I'm not sure if there is a particular season such as winter that is better. The island is beautiful and tropical though and worth seeing.

A few things i've leaned, since 1980, in traveling in the Carribean : St. John's east shore is the worst foot-deep pile of plastic jetsam and flotsam-clogged beaches i have ever seen in my life. The weather in mid-winter usually does not require you to pack a jacket for warmth, only rain-shedding. The phone home prices are astronomical and certainly anti-tourist on many C. islands. And the hassling of tourists at docks and in cities near docks, not just anti-Americanism, is a huge anti-tourism problem. There does not seem to be a 'standard' for standard tourist accommodations, so that you may get a cockroach infested hotel in Barbados or not. Also consider that any island that has a cruise ship port is either going to be desirably super-crowded, like St. Thomas, or undesirable. Even with all the easy money from tourism , many C. islands are doing a terrible job of protecting the environment, education their public, and keeping the island safe for both residents and tourists, ala Aruba(never going there.) Responsible and popular civil government is so rare, so do not go looking for trouble, it may find you first!! Many locals seem intent of doing you harm or at the very least ,taking extreme economic advantage of you, their visitor. No wonder most Europeans favor the Greek islands.
